Five strategies used by the Israel Lobby to silence critics. Over the last 30 years I have experienced the first four.

1. Infiltration
They will begin by befriending you, offer to connect you, fund you, even invite you to an all-expenses paid trip to Israel, in order to bring you on-side. If that doesn’t work, they will move to level 2.

2. Intimidation
If they don’t like what you are saying or writing, they will bombard you with emails, letters and phone calls – even anonymously. They will put you on the defensive to shut you up. They will intimidate you with accusations of anti-semitism, holocaust denial, terrorism, etc. They will draft critical articles about you and send to sympathetic journalists to publish, especially the Jewish Chronicle. If it doesn’t cause paranoia, I recommend you set up a ‘Google Alert’ on your name so that you are sent links whenever your name appears on the Internet. If that doesn’t work, they will move to level 3.

3. Isolation
If they can’t stop you, they will isolate you by intimidating your friends and colleagues. They will limit the damage you can cause by making you appear toxic. They will intimidate others by smearing them with guilt-by-association. If necessary, they will threaten to withdraw any funding provided in #1. If that doesn’t work they will move to level 4.

4. Incrimination
They will make complaints to any regulatory body connected to your employment as well as to the police (and then alert sympathetic journalists) alleging criminal activity, with terrorism, incitement, with literally anything to arouse the interest of the authorities. If that doesn’t work, they will, as a last resort, consider level 5.

5. Immolate
Not the best word to describe level 5, but ‘eliminate’ begins with an ‘e’. And it will probably appear as suicide.

Ignore — they always start by hoping you’ll just go away.
Insult — if you don’t go away, they’ll ridicule you or make you out to be a nut.
Intimidate — when simple mockery fails, the gloves come off and they bombard you with emails.
Isolate — then they seek to divide and conquer by intimidating others to isolate you.
Incriminate — they frame or smear you and force you to defend yourself with legal fees.
Incarcerate — when all else fails, as judge and jury, they put your life in the crosshairs.
Immolate — and it will probably appear as suicide (because eliminate begins with an ‘e’).
